Which RRV Resident Return Visa you are eligible for depends on your location at the time of application and your current circumstances. The table below can be used as a guide.

• Has substantial ties of benefit to Australia (business, employment, cultural, or personal)
• If absent for ≥5 years, must also show compelling reasons for that absence
Subclass 155 – 1-year RRV (onshore only)In Australia only• Was an Australian permanent resident or former Australian citizen whose last PR was not cancelled within the last 10 years
Does not meet the 2-in-5 residence requirement
• Has substantial ties of benefit to Australia
• If absent for ≥5 years, must also show compelling reasons for that absence
157 RRV visa – Valid for 3 monthsIn or Outside Australia• Was a PR or citizen and has been in Australia for at least 1 day but less than 2 years in the last 5 years
• Must show compelling and compassionate reasons for last departure from Australia and, if relevant, for current/extended absence

Important: If it has been more than 10 years since you last held Australian permanent residence or citizenship, a Resident Return Visa application can generally only be made from inside Australia, as the offshore pathway is no longer available.
