RRV 155 Visa – 5-Year Resident Return Visa

The RRV 155 visa allows Australian permanent residents to renew their travel facility for up to five years. This lets you continue travelling in and out of Australia as a permanent resident. Permanent residence itself does not expire. However, the travel facility attached to it does. If your travel facility has expired or is about to expire, you must hold a valid Resident Return Visa (RRV) to return to Australia as a permanent resident.

Who Is Eligible for an RRV 155 Visa?

You will usually qualify for an RRV 155 visa if you have lived in Australia for at least two years within the last five years as a permanent resident. This requirement is based on physical presence in Australia. Time spent overseas does not count toward the two-year total. If you clearly meet this requirement, your application is often straightforward. Clear evidence is still important.

RRV 155 Residence Requirement (Two Years in Five)

To meet the residence requirement, you must show that you were physically present in Australia for at least 730 days during the last five years.

The Department of Home Affairs checks:

  • Your travel history
  • Entry and exit dates
  • Periods of lawful permanent residence

Short trips overseas usually do not cause problems if you still meet the total time requirement.

What Evidence Is Required for an RRV 155 Application?

The evidence you need focuses on proving your time spent in Australia.

Common documents include:

  • Passport travel history
  • Current and previous visas
  • Records showing periods of residence in Australia

Your documents must be consistent and easy to follow. Clear evidence helps avoid delays.

How Long Is an RRV 155 Visa Valid For?

An RRV 155 visa is usually granted with a five-year travel facility if you meet the residence requirement. In limited cases, a shorter travel facility may be granted. This depends on your individual circumstances. Once granted, you can travel freely in and out of Australia during the visa validity period.

Can You Apply for an RRV 155 Visa Outside Australia?

Yes. You can apply for an RRV 155 visa either inside or outside Australia. If you apply outside Australia, the visa must be granted before you travel. If you apply inside Australia, you must hold a valid visa at the time of application.

What Happens If You Do Not Meet the RRV 155 Requirements?

If you do not meet the two-year residence requirement, you may not qualify for an RRV 155 visa. The RRV 157 visa is assessed more discretionally and requires stronger supporting evidence. You may still be eligible for a shorter-term RRV (subclass 157) if you can show:
